I was born into an British army family. My father spent much of his life in the army. He joined as a young man and left when he was an officer some thirty years later.
I never liked the military and still don’t. But I did my military time even as a kid. Military schools and then Conscription. Joined the RAF and got kicked off a course for fighter pilots. I have never accepted the propaganda story that the military was to defend me and my country from attack by enemies, It’s too simple and glib.
The British army had its share of attack and kill. Yes. I know there was WW2. But perhaps Hitler would never have come to power if the Allies had viewed the end of WW1 as a time for a Marshall Plan rather than a time to try and make the enemy pay for the war.Politicians who make the wars also make the peace.
Today I listened to President Psychopath. We now have a form of truce. But it is unclear how or if it will work. Do I live in hope? I wish that we all live in hope. Soldiers from Iran, US, Lebanon, Israel and other states and civilians have met their deaths. I have mixed feelings about soldiers as they act in good to evil situations, but they are human. There have mothers, fathers, brother, sisters. This is for all of them.
To a soldier killed in War in this sad year of 2026
After the Battle
A song in shadows,
a sad gift returned by firelight.
Wrapped in blood juiced clothes, damp litter of the battle field.
I asked for immortality.
Dead. I will now eat with all
playing words with your eyes.
Eleven hours counting. One more. I have no fear of shadows
as we stand within our shade.
